Portal Layout
Set the sidebar, dashboard, storefront text, and layout patients see when they sign in.
This page shows you how to set up what patients see when they sign in. You choose the sidebar pages, the dashboard sections, and the text on your storefront (the page patients see when they browse and buy). You do this as a Client Admin.
Can you skip this? Most brands launch with the default layout. You can change any of it later. Set the sidebar and the storefront text now, and leave the rest for another day.
Before you start
Have these ready:
A short list of the pages patients need, like Visits, Messages, and Orders
Your storefront headline and one short line to go under it
A test patient login, so you can preview your changes (optional)
Who does what: You do all of this yourself. Your provider network (the licensed doctors who review orders and prescribe) and GEN Health support do not touch these settings.
Time: About 15 minutes. There is no waiting.
Open the Patient experience page
In the left menu, click Settings. On the settings grid, click the Patient experience card. The Patient experience page opens. You see sections for layout, sidebar, dashboard, and text.
Set the portal look
Find the Portal layout section. Pick a Border style: Rounded, Medium, or Sharp. Then pick a Layout width: Contained (narrower) or Wide. Your choice applies to every signed-in patient page.
Choose the sidebar pages
Find the Patient navigation section. Turn on the pages patients need. You can turn on Visits, Messages, Prescriptions, Products, Labs, Orders, and Knowledge base. Drag the pages to reorder them, and rename any of them. You can also add a custom link to a page outside the portal, like your main website.
Arrange the dashboard sections
Find the Patient dashboard section. Turn these sections on or off: Orders (care updates and add-on requests), Daily health (health tracking cards), and Wearables & apps (connect a device). Put the section most patients need at the top.
Set your storefront text
Find the Themes section. This holds the text patients see, the words on each page. Each theme has a Headline, a Subhead, and a Trust note. Write short, clear words in your brand's voice. Check all four: Checkout theme, Login theme, Email theme, and Form theme.
Set the checkout order
Find the Checkout sequence section. For Products and for Labs, pick one order. Intake first means the patient answers the health questions before they pay. Payment first means the patient pays first, then answers the questions.
Check it as a patient
Log in with a test patient account. Look at the sidebar, the dashboard, and the storefront text. Make sure a patient can quickly find their next step.
Start with a short sidebar. Fewer pages means less patient confusion. Turn on only what patients need now. Add more pages later.
Wearables are optional. Turn on Wearables & apps only if your programs use device data, like steps or heart rate. If they do not, leave it off.
Three sidebar pages are always on and cannot be removed: Dashboard, Forms, and Wallet. You can reorder and rename them, but you cannot turn them off.
Words to know
| Word | What it means |
|---|---|
| Storefront | The page patients see when they browse and buy your products. |
| Provider network | The medical team that employs the doctors who review your patients. You partner with one; you do not hire the doctors yourself. |
Can I preview the layout without a real patient?
Yes. Use a test patient account.
- Log in as the test patient after each change.
- What the test patient sees is what real patients see.
Should I pick Contained or Wide layout width?
Try both with your test patient account.
- Contained is narrower and keeps reading focused.
- Wide fits more on the screen.
- Pick the one that makes your top section easiest to read.
Why can't I remove Dashboard, Forms, or Wallet?
These three pages are required.
- Patients need them to use the portal.
- You can reorder and rename them, but not turn them off.
Where do I set patient reminders?
On this same page, in the Patient notifications section.
- Reminders have their own guide.
- See Patient Notifications below.
